2009, BUILDING DESIGNERS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA AWARDS
Winner . Best Residential Alterations/Additions up to $200,000 Construction Cost
The Wilkins Street residence is a heritage listed 1920s brick veneer home in an area of predominantly weatherboard buildings. The client wanted restore the period features of the existing house, yet transform their home for contemporary living with an extension that captured a sense of space, made the most of natural light and had a strong connection to the landscaped areas.
We took the opportunity to complement the existing home with a contemporary extension which allowed the original residence to stand on its own, as a contributory building under its heritage listing, in its original building envelope. The treatment of the contemporary addition served to highlight + preserve the character of the original 1920 residence that would have otherwise been lost.
The extension has been kept at eaves height and represents a modern take on traditional lean-to construction. The internal feel contrasts that of the existing in that it is light + bright, creating an excitement when traveling through old to new.
This residence met a very tight budget combining the restoration of a period home + a contemporary addition. The separation of the different activities in the house between new + period areas allowed for two different styles to co-exist creating a dynamic contrast.
